USDA awards MobiLaps
LLC Phase I SBIR
Empowering WiFi-based ISPs to bridge the rural/urban broadband digital
divide
May
15, 2004
The MobiLaps LLC research
will address the challenge that rural mom & pop ISPs have in finding an
economical mechanism for backhauling local Internet traffic to/from the
national Internet backbone. The proposed patent-pending approach will allow
rural mom & pop ISPs to piggyback additional commercial services on top of WiFi-based broadband Internet local access. The additional commercial
services will be of value to end-users as well as third parties (e.g.
advertisers). As such, the additional commercial services will generate
additional profits, which in turn can be used to subsidize the cost of T1 line
connectivity.
“Being
selected as part of this very competitive process is a big honor for us. We look
forward to help the agricultural and rural communities overcome some of their
challenges by applying state-of-the art IT and wireless technologies”
said Dr. Hisham Kassab, President & CEO of Mobilaps. The USDA SBIR program makes competitively awarded
grants to qualified small businesses to support quality, advanced concepts
research related to important scientific problems and opportunities in agriculture
that could lead to significant public benefit if successful.
